Basic Questions, Basic Needs

The first thing to determine is the volume of printing you do. The more you print, the more you should consider using compatible ink cartridges rather than branded cartridges. You may have to experiment with several brands of compatible printer cartridges to find one that offers a good balance of low cost with high print quality. Be aware that cheaper than cheap compatible Canon ink cartridges may use low quality inks that dry out quickly and cheap plastic casings that may leak. Although sometimes it’s possible to clean a printer ink cartridge, results are variable. Be sure to check the software that came with your printer to see if it contains a cleaning program. Peripheral Printing Issues

Ask yourself how important it is for your printed output to resist fading. This resistance is called a print’s “archival” quality. If this is a concern for you, then choose a brand-name ink cartridge rather than a no-name compatible. It’s more likely that the major manufacturers like HP, Canon and Epson have tested and formulated their inks to better resist fading than cheap inkjet cartridges. It’s important to realise, though, that this picture is changing. Many third-party inks are now comparable in quality to OEM (original equipment manufacturer) inks. Fading is not always due to the ink. Substandard, poor quality paper results in substandard, poor quality prints that fade quickly. So be sure to check with your printer manufacturer to see what type of paper is best to use. There are some things you can do to increase print longevity such as storing them away from bright lights and excessive humidity. Some inexpensive inks are prone to erosion from ozone and other airborne pollutants that cause fading.

Finally, when choosing cheap Canon inkjet cartridges or cartridges for other popular brands, make sure that you can recycle the cartridge. This will help keep millions of discarded cartridges out of UK landfills and dumps where they can take hundreds of years to decompose.
